The Fort

September 14 2017

I am currently sitting on a picnic table, on a hill top, overlooking part of the forest and part of the ocean in Battery Provincial Park in St. Peter’s Cape Breton, NS. I booked a sailing adventure for tomorrow which is why I decided to stay one more day here. Today I went to Louisbourg and to the Fortress of Louisbourg. Oh man it’s so cool! The actual fortress was built in the 18th century during battle. Staff dress in period clothing and you can look and learn and explore almost anywhere and everywhere in each building. The “townfolk” describe who they were, what their role and lives were like during the war/time.

But the coolest part, I got to shoot a musket! The soldier dressed me in 18th century gear typical of them. I put earplugs and glasses and they showed me how to do it- and then I did it! Luckily, no misfire, which apparently happens a lot. It was SO FUN! I got one of them to take photos and I set up my phone for a video.

One of the solider residents at the Fort asked me where I was from (probably in his 50s) I said Windsor, Ontario and he said “you must go to the University there- they say the most good looking women are in Southern Ontario and you fit that!” HAHAHA I laughed so hard but said thank you.

I had planned to leave Cape Breton but I really wanted to do the sailing- as I was driving through St Peters, I saw a sign. Literally, a sign that said SAILING TOURS so I stopped, looked it up online and booked it.

I’ve finished two novels so far; The Girl On The Train and The Alchemist….now onto The Rest of Us Just Live Here.

So much excitement and beauty, happy to be doing this. Thankful. Grateful. Cool to do it alone, but it would be nice to share this experience and excitement with someone. I do have a lot of people sharing it via social media and texts….but….still alone.
